El Eternauta: Remembering the History and the Terror

Days before the premiere of the series 'El Eternauta', the story behind its creation and the legacy of political violence left by the Montoneros organization in Argentina is highlighted.

El Eternauta: Remembering the History and the Terror

In 1971, dozens of terrorists were captured and tried by the military government led by General Agustín Lanusse. However, upon the return of democracy in 1973, the elected government of Héctor J. Cámpora freed them. Later, when General Juan Domingo Perón was elected, terrorist groups attempted to overthrow him, which led Perón to order their annihilation with the Armed Forces and Security.

Among those affected by these events was the Oesterheld family. Héctor Oesterheld, known for being the author of "El Eternauta", suffered the disappearance of several of his relatives, who were militants of the Montoneros organization. In April 1977, Héctor, his daughters Beatriz Marta, Diana Irene, Marina, as well as his wife Elsa Sánchez de Oesterheld, were victims of the brutality of the political events of the time.

In November of the same year, Juancito Barrios and Corporal 1st Herculano Ojeda also lost their lives at the hands of the terrorists. Although years later the State compensated Oesterheld's widow, Elsa Sánchez de Oesterheld, with 1,120,000 dollars, the story of Juancito, Corporal 1st Ojeda and their families has never been recognized or compensated.

The series "El Eternauta" has sparked interest in the public, generating discussions about the life and work of Héctor Oesterheld, as well as the political violence that marked his existence. Despite the popularity of the comic and its adaptation to the small screen, it is relevant to remember the tragedy that the Oesterheld family experienced due to their connection with the Montoneros organization and the tragic events they went through during the military dictatorship in Argentina.

The series has attracted attention on digital platforms, leading Netflix to confirm a second season shortly after its release. Amid this revival of "El Eternauta", it is essential to keep alive the memory of the horrors of the past and understand the complex history behind this iconic work of Argentine comics.
